What to look for in a female fitness trainer
The process of finding a great woman personal trainer isn’t difficult, but it’s something that you should take your time with. Your trainer will be someone you confide in, share your fitness and health goals with, and learn from, so it’s important to make sure you’re comfortable with their personality and their approach to fitness.
For starters, you’ll want to seek out someone with a valid personal training certification. Most gyms – including Columbia Association (CA) – require trainers to be certified, but there are a number of different certifications that they may hold. Some of the popular options include the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and the American Council on Exercise (ACE).
Certifications give you some insight into your trainer’s fitness and health education and can highlight their special areas of expertise, such as strength training or group exercise. Many trainers have also completed bachelor’s or advanced degrees in various exercise-related disciplines, so ask about that as well.
Separately, you should also talk to your trainer about how they’ve helped people like you in the past. This is important for all personal training clients, but it’s particularly crucial if you’re trying to train for a specific event (like a marathon or fitness competition) or if you have a medical condition (such as diabetes, heart problems, or postpartum complications).
Finally, speak with your trainer about their expectations of you and their leadership style. For instance, if you’re motivated by a tougher, boot-camp-style approach, make that clear. The same goes if you prefer gentler coaching methods. You want to make sure that you’re on the same page before you hit the gym floor; otherwise, you might find that your styles clash – which may affect your motivation to attend training.
