How to Start Working Out with a Pilates Personal Trainer
Interested in trying Pilates? Learn how to find a personal trainer
Pilates is a well-loved workout with many people around the world, but if you haven’t tried it before, getting started might seem intimidating. Luckily, starting your Pilates journey is easier than ever, with classes and private sessions available for people of all experience levels.
Here’s what you should know about signing up for Pilates, including which kinds of classes are available and where to find a Pilates personal trainer.
What is Pilates?
Before we talk about where to find a Pilates personal trainer, let’s cover some basics first – starting with the definition of Pilates.
Created in the early 20th century, Pilates is a type of exercise that focuses on stretching, increasing core strength, and toning muscles. It can be done in several ways, including on a mat or using a special bed-shaped apparatus (known as a reformer). More advanced classes may incorporate other Pilates equipment, such as chairs and ladder barrels.
Even though it’s designed to be low-impact on the body, Pilates can deliver incredible results, boosting both physical and mental health. It’s an effective way to increase strength and flexibility, improve posture and coordination, and challenge your mind and body.

Why work with a Pilates personal trainer
Pilates is a versatile activity, and it can be done from the comfort of home, in a group fitness class, or in a private session with a certified Pilates instructor.
You’ll find instructors at many places, including fitness clubs and specialty Pilates studios. For example, at Columbia Association (CA), we have a fantastic team of Pilates personal trainers who work out of our fully-equipped studio at Columbia Gym.
If you’re new to Pilates, have health issues, or simply want some one-on-one attention from a professional, then you might be interested in working with a private Pilates personal trainer (rather than jumping straight into a class or following a video online).
Signing up for a private lesson or class is a great way to ensure that you’re following proper form and staying safe while using the Pilates equipment – which is especially important if you’re a Pilates first-timer or have physical disabilities or other health challenges.
Even if you’ve been doing Pilates for years, signing up for a private or semi-private session can be a good opportunity to have a professional assess your form and make any adjustments. Plus, it’s just fun!
What to know before your first Pilates session
Whether you’re attending a private Pilates lesson or a group class, there are a few things to keep in mind before your first session.
First, if you have any injuries or physical limitations, it’s a good idea to come a few minutes early and discuss this with your Pilates instructor. In cases like these, the trainer can offer modified versions of the exercises so that they’re safe for your body. Similarly, even if you don’t have any known injuries, you can always request a modification if something doesn’t feel right during your session.
Next, don’t be shy to ask questions. As a newcomer, Pilates equipment might seem confusing, but remember that your instructor is there to help. Check in with them if you’re unsure how to use a particular apparatus or perform a certain move.
Finally, walk into the session with an open mind. Pilates is different from many other workouts, so it may take a little getting used to – but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be hooked!
