Stewardship of the environment and conservation are key aspects of the origin of Columbia, MD. In 2012, CA created its energy management program and since then, significant progress has been made in reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Strategic goals established by CA leadership in planning and budget documents include addressing the sustainability of CA operations with a focus on effective energy management and GHG emissions reductions. Since 2012, CA has reduced its energy use intensity by over 20 percent and its GHG emissions by more than half. Dozens of LED lighting projects have been implemented, ENERGY STAR HVAC units are installed as a standard, and electricity use is fully offset with solar and wind sources.
