Dance Your Way to Better Fitness
It may be the happiest time of the year, but if we’re being honest, this holiday season could use some extra festivity. You deserve to enjoy yourself and feel your best. Dance fitness is a uniquely joyful way to do so.
After this rollercoaster of a year, dancing is one of the best ways to shake off stress and reconnect with your zest for life. The beautiful thing is that everyone can participate, regardless of age, body type and skill level. There’s no special equipment required either…all you need is yourself!
Why dance?
Since ancient times, dance has played a vital role in ritual, ceremony and just good old entertainment. With or without a partner, moving your body to the rhythm of the music torches calories and allows you to access the same rush as a runner’s high.
Dancing is also a low-impact aerobic workout. Like all aerobic exercises, it’s overall good for cardio since it strengthens the heart, lungs and circulatory system. It’s also a way to improve core strength, coordination, balance and flexibility. Enhanced coordination means injury prevention for all ages, from high school athletes to senior citizens.
It probably comes as no surprise that it also offers a number of psychological benefits. For decades, studies have shown that dancing releases endorphins, your “happy hormones” which also act as a natural painkiller. Some therapists even prescribe dancing as therapy for people who suffer from depression, social anxiety or fear of public speaking.
Beyond lifting your mood, busting a move keeps the mind sharp. Learning new steps and moves lifts brain fog (and ‘pandemic brain’) and reverses volume loss in the hippocampus, which controls memory. A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that dancing is linked to a lower rate of dementia, and learning new dance steps is also thought to promote the growth of new neurons and activate connections between existing ones.
Here’s a quick list of some additional benefits:
- Improves posture
- Reduces stress
- Strengthens the bones
- Improves sleep
- Increases flexibility
- Boosts energy levels
- Helps maintain a healthy heart
- Aids in weight loss
- Increases muscle strength
- Reduces pain and stiffness
