How to Create Fitness New Year’s Resolutions You’ll Stick With
There’s no doubt that 2020 has been all about our health…though maybe not in the way we’re used to. From Clorox-ing our Amazon packages to finding creative ways to work out — the Columbia community has shown consistent dedication to stay fit and strong amid a life-altering pandemic.
Now, it’s time to carry that health-focused energy into 2021, and we’ve got six fantastic fitness tips to help you stick to even the most challenging resolutions.
Make it a competition
With apps like StepBet and Fitbit, you have the opportunity to join monthly competitions around meeting your fitness goals. When you need a little motivation, having a group of people competing to meet their step goal can help you stay on track. Plus, it encourages you to get outdoors and get some fresh air.
Start with small goals
It’s great to say you want to lose 25 pounds or deadlift 150 pounds by the end of the year. Sometimes, however, those bigger numbers can seem overwhelming and make it harder for you to stay motivated.
It’s better to break your goals into smaller numbers and give yourself little rewards along the way. After you lose that first five pounds, you’ll be motivated and excited to hit the 10-pound mark.
Wake up in workout clothes
If mornings aren’t your thing, try making them easier. CA’s fitness pros suggest sleeping in your workout clothes, so you’re ready to face the treadmill right when you jump out of bed. It’s one less thing to worry about and will inspire you to get going first thing in the morning.

Get a workout buddy
This one’s pretty straightforward: Doing things with a buddy is just more fun! Make a date to go for a run or take a yoga class with a friend. Even if you’re both joining the same Peloton class, it’s fun to see a familiar name pop up on the screen. Better yet, pick out new healthy recipes and cook them together in-person or via Zoom.
Having an accountability buddy allows you to celebrate your wins alongside a friend or family member. What’s better than that?
Write down your goals
When we make a substantial promise to ourselves, it’s much easier to keep, especially if we see that promise in writing.
Write down your health goals for the new year on colorful post-its and stick them where you can see them daily. Reminding yourself of your goals will motivate you to keep going — even on those early mornings when you want to stay in bed.
Stick to what you like
If you hate running, it’s best not to task yourself with completing a marathon in 2021. Instead, figure out what you enjoy and create goals around that.
If you’re a yogi, make a goal to master the headstand by the end of the year. Cycling more your thing? Hit 100 classes by June. When you have goals that align with your interests, you’re much more likely to check them off your to-do list.
