How Your Village is Safely Celebrating the Holidays
We probably won’t be able to visit Santa in-person this year, but our villages have come up with some safe ways to enjoy the holidays and give back to our community. Here’s a look at some of those events.
Hickory Ridge
Hickory Ridge Community Association will be holding a donation drive on Saturday, December 5 (weather permitting), to benefit Columbia Community Care. That drive takes place at The Hawthorn Center at 6175 Sunny Spring. During the last donation drive in October, we collected hundreds of pounds of non-perishable food and household items. This is a no-contact drive-through event, so all you have to do is pull up, open your door/trunk and volunteers will take items out.
Items needed include the following:
- Non-perishable food such as canned soup, canned beans, fruit and veg, canned meat, pasta, mac ‘n’ cheese, cereal, rice, flour, sugar, cooking oil, etc.
- Personal care items such as diapers, wipes, pads and tampons, toothpaste, toiletries
- Household items such as toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, trash bags

Kings Contrivance
Kings Contrivance Community Association is hosting a few Zoom with Santa sessions throughout the month of December, and there are still spaces available! The registration deadline has been extended to December 11. You can find more information below:
Kings Contrivance is also encouraging neighbors to donate winter clothing to Howard County Library System locations throughout the month of December. Donations of child-sized mittens, hats and/or scarves will be given to the Community Action Council of Howard County for Head Start children and families.
Oakland Mills
The Oakland Mills Community Association will have donation boxes outside of The Other Barn (5851 Robert Oliver Place) to collect items for the Oakland Mills High School Food Pantry and the Columbia Community Cares Toy Drive.
The following items are some of the most urgent needs for the OMHS Food Pantry:
- Canned/dried beans
- Canned/packaged fruit
- Applesauce
- Juice
- Raisins
- Macaroni & cheese
- Soup
- Peanut butter
- Canned vegetables
The Columbia Community Care Toy Drive is looking for NEW toys, books, mittens, gloves, and hats. For more information, please visit the Columbia Community Care Facebook page. Please wear your mask and practice safe social distancing when dropping off your items!
Owen Brown
The Owen Brown Community Association encourages everyone to show off their holiday spirit by sharing pictures of their homes decked out for the season. You can send your festive photos and street name to events@owenbrownvillage.org, and those will be featured on the Facebook page by December 15. That way, neighbors can drive by and take a peak.
Wilde Lake
The Wilde Lake Community Association is co-sponsoring a Wilde Winter Wonderland Winter Craft Giveaway. To reserve kits, email your name, address and the number of children to event coordinator Rachael Strube at camp@wildelake.org. Drive-through pick-up takes place Saturday, December 5, from 2pm to 3pm at the Faulkner Ridge Neighborhood Center. Masks are required! You can find more information below:
