Columbia’s 50th Birthday
Columbia, Maryland, was groundbreaking from the moment its developers first broke ground.
Our community was officially founded on June 21, 1967. That in and of itself was a cause for celebration. James Rouse wanted to build a complete city, not just another suburb. Columbia was, and remains, a truly special place. It was covered by the national media in its early days and continues to be lauded as one of the best places to live — most recently named the No. 1 small city to live in, according to Money Magazine.
There has been plenty to celebrate in the decades since. Columbia’s birthday has been marked each year. This year’s 50th birthday is cause for the grandest of celebrations.
Columbia’s 50th Birthday celebration began on March 19 and will continue to unfold over the course of 27 weeks, commemorating a special year for a special community. The schedule includes more than 100 events, with a wide range of activities marking Columbia’s history — “Appreciating the Past” — and providing inspiration to “Imagine the Future.”
See the schedule of events at ColumbiaMD50.com. And please join in on the celebration. After all, so much of what makes Columbia special comes from the people who live, work and play here.
