Fete Event
Celebrate Columbia: A special evening fete of sights and sounds was held on Sunday, October 1 at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront.
Late afternoon activities began with the Poster Tree Dedication in Kennedy Garden. Gail Holliday returned to Columbia for this dedication of her work: twenty-two of her original neighborhood posters, restored over the early summer months, were installed permanently on the far side of the Lake Kittamaqundi walking path.
Afterwards, the Chesapeake Shakespeare Theatre performed a humorous segment from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Immediately following Shakespeare, a delightful ensemble from Misako Ballet Company entertained the audience with Japanese-inspired dances having a classical twist.
As the evening grew dark, sounds of the 1960s burst forth from the Columbia Orchestra, who were joined by Glenn Quader and his band in a spirited medley of songs from the Beatles. The music was accompanied by a dramatic light show that illuminated surrounding buildings, the fountain and the landscape.
It was a memorable close to an event-filled twenty-nine weeks of 50th Birthday celebrations in Columbia.
