As the General Counsel at Columbia Association, John Kuchno advises CA’s leadership team on legal matters relating to governance, contracts, real estate transactions, land use, labor and employment, compliance and investigations.

John is an accomplished attorney, public servant and former judge with extensive trial, litigation management, risk management, supervisory and counseling experience. Prior to joining CA, he served as the Deputy Chief of Litigation for the Maryland Attorney General’s Office, where he litigated, managed and supervised legal matters in the Civil Litigation Division, which directs the most significant litigation involving the State. John also served as an Associate Judge on the Circuit Court for Howard County, where The Washington Post recognized him as “an excellent sitting circuit court judge . . . well qualified and carefully vetted.”

A current member of the Character Committee for the State Board of Law Examiners, John served for more than two decades on Inquiry and Peer Review Panels of the Attorney Grievance Commission of Maryland. He has held leadership positions in local and state bar associations, and been an instructor in legal education and trial practice programs. John is a member of the Maryland Bar and the Bars of the United States District Court for the Districts of Maryland and the District of Columbia (inactive), Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

John graduated summa cum laude from the University of Maryland College Park, where he was named the Outstanding Senior in the College of Journalism, and received his juris doctorate degree from the University of Maryland Carey School of Law. He is a long-time resident of the village of Dorsey’s Search and enjoys working out at CA’s fitness clubs, being at the beach with his family and cheering on UMD sports.
