Fall Brings Start to Exciting New Year at Howard Community College
As fall approaches, Howard Community College marks its 46th year of educating county residents.
Howard Community College started with only one building on campus, but community support has helped HCC grow to serving 30,000 credit and noncredit students each year. HCC continues to provide families with the most affordable, quality higher education option in Howard County.
Even with growth, one constant has always held true: HCC builds the workforce of the future. Employers turn to our graduates with job opportunities because they recognize that HCC is key in ensuring the vitality of our community.
Students turn to HCC because the college offers associate degrees and certificates built around academic areas such as the arts, health sciences, engineering, business, and cybersecurity. HCC also provides students with the opportunity to transfer to a four-year university to complete a baccalaureate degree, or take classes to sharpen job skills, prepare for a new career or explore personal interests.
Businesses turn to HCC for its premier wellness and teambuilding event, the HCC 5K Challenge Race. On Oct. 30, Columbia Association will be a major supporter of the race, which is designed with employee wellness in mind. Employees from sponsoring companies participate in weekly training runs leading up to the race, which raises funds for student scholarships. Community members turn to HCC as a place of employment. HCC was named as a Great College to Work For by The Chronicle of Higher Education for the eighth consecutive year, a record unmatched among Maryland community colleges. I am proud of our faculty and staff who dedicate themselves to living the HCC mission of providing pathways to success.
Student success will be enhanced with HCC’s new Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Building. As you drive along Little Patuxent Parkway, you will see this building rising out of the ground. Scheduled to open by summer 2017, the building will feature a cybersecurity lab, engineering build room, an observatory, a greenhouse and classrooms.
