CA encourages residents to plant native species where possible. We are working on a Bee-friendly campaign to promote the use of pollinator-friendly plants throughout the community. Pollinators need a variety of plants in the landscape to thrive. Mowed turf is great for some spaces, but creating garden patches for pollinators is an important step to protect key species. We recommend building intentional pollinator gardens with a variety of shapes, colors, heights, and flowering times throughout the growing season to provide nectar and pollen for native insects.

Ongoing Project: Hopewell Meadow

The Hopewell Meadow Project began in winter 2022 has been establishing native plant populations steadily ever since. Many species of plants, insects, birds and other species have been steadily recovering thanks to the efforts of the members of project team and the volunteers of the Columbia community.

CA’s sustainability team has biweekly workdays on the first and third Wednesday from 1-4pm at the Hopewell Meadow, located in Hopewell Park in the Owen Brown village (9210 Curtis Drive).
