See free movies, concerts and more nearly every night this summer at CA’s Lakefront Summer Festival
JUNE 12, 2018 — Another great summer of movies, concerts and more is set to begin this year in Columbia. With a packed schedule of 25 movies and 52 concerts, Columbia Association’s Lakefront Summer Festival includes completely free, family-friendly options nearly every day of the week. The festival begins on Monday, June 18 and continues into September. A complete schedule can be found at columbiaassociation.org/lakefrontfestival.
Movies will be screened at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront under the stars on Mondays and Fridays from Monday, June 18 through Monday, August 27. All films are closed-captioned.
Films shown on Mondays are appropriate for young audience members, with G- and PG-rated selections such as The Secret Life of Pets; Captain Underpants; anime film Mary and the Witch’s Flower; Paddington 2; The Incredibles; Disney’s The Princess and the Frog; Bambi; The Lion King; Frozen; Coco; and Wreck-It Ralph.
The Friday movies are rated PG and PG-13, with selections such as Black Panther; Ant-Man; The Lego Batman Movie; The Princess Bride; Wonder Woman; Wonder; Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation; Rogue One: A Star Wars Story; Doctor Strange; and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
And then, from Aug. 31 through Sept. 8, CA will show Marvel Comics Universe movies every Friday and Saturday. These titles include Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 1; Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2; Thor: Ragnarok; and Avengers: Infinity War. Each is rated PG-13.
All showings will begin at dusk, about 8:30pm. Movie nights have been hosted by Tom “Mr. B” Brzezinski for the past 47 years and are sponsored by Columbia Association, with a generous grant from the Columbia Film Society.
Also, 45 nights and seven afternoons of music are scheduled through September. Concerts and performances are held on almost every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday through August 16, with additional concerts on four Sundays in September.
Start times are as follows:
- Tuesdays, 7:30pm.
- Wednesdays from June 27-Aug. 15, noon (formerly known as CA’s Lakefront Wednesdays Lunchtime Concert Series). No concert on July 4.
- Wednesdays from June 20-Aug. 15, 7:30pm. No concert on July 4.
- Thursdays, 7:30pm. No concert on July 5.
- Saturdays, 7:30pm
- Sundays through August 12, 6:30pm
- Sundays from September 9-30, 3pm
Five Tuesdays in July — July 3, July 10, July 17, July 24 and July 31 — will feature talented youth musicians performing at CA’s Teen Open Mic nights. Sign-up begins at 6:45pm and performances are first-come, first-served. No bands with drum sets will be allowed. For more information, please email CALakefrontFestival@gmail.com.
And, finally, CA’s annual “Dancin’ Under the People Tree” free dance lessons will be hosted every Friday from June 22 through September 7. Instruction with music will be held under the People Tree from 7-8pm, with dances that are fun both for beginners and those with experience. And when the dance session ends, the movie begins.
