An Introduction to Cooper® Tracks
Did you know that lifestyle modifications can significantly reduce the risks associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), and improve overall health and wellbeing?
Columbia Association (CA) is proud to introduce a new program specifically targeting cardiovascular health at Columbia Athletic Club, the only fitness club in the state to offer this holistic program. Cooper® Tracks is a series of exercise and education programs for individuals living with chronic health conditions, including those diagnosed with stable cardiovascular disease or risk factors (as well as those who have completed cardiac rehabilitation).
A quick note – CA provides an incredible array of programs and facilities for you to invest in your health and wellness, but you should always consult with your doctor regarding your personal health needs, limitations and treatment options.
What is Cooper® Tracks?
Cooper® Tracks comes from The Cooper Clinic, is a renowned medical facility located at the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas, Texas. The program was established by Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper, a pioneer in preventive medicine and the father of the aerobics movement.
Cooper® Tracks is a comprehensive exercise and educational program aimed at empowering individuals in their journey toward healthier living. With a focus on managing chronic diseases and enhancing immune health, this program provides guidance, support, and valuable resources.
Fitness classes within Cooper® Tracks are specifically designed to aid patients who have completed physical rehabilitation, cancer treatment, diabetes education or other rehabilitation programs.
CA is excited to be the first in Maryland to share the program with our community and a continued wellness leader throughout the region!
What is CVD?
CVD refers to a range of conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels. Certain factors can increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, such as:
- Age – Older adults are at a greater risk.
- Family history – Having a family history of cardiovascular disease, particularly at a young age, can elevate the risk.
- High blood pressure – Uncontrolled high blood pressure significantly increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
- High cholesterol – Elevated levels of LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) and low levels of HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol) can contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease.
- Obesity and sedentary lifestyle.
- Smoking – Tobacco smoking damages blood vessels and increases the likelihood of blood clots.
- Diabetes – Elevated blood sugar levels damage blood vessels over time, putting individuals with diabetes at a higher risk.
Give yourself the best possible chance at success
Adopting heart-healthy habits, including medication adherence and regular check-ups, is vital for individuals at risk or living with cardiovascular disease.
While making lifestyle modifications can be challenging, committing to a structured program can greatly assist. That’s why CA is thrilled to introduce the Cooper® Tracks program: It offers a sense of accountability, support, community and expertise.
Cardio Track
We’re kicking off our introduction to Cooper® Tracks with the Cooper® Tracks Cardiovascular Program. This program recognizes the crucial role of exercise and lifestyle modification in managing both physical and mental health. Starting an exercise routine can be intimidating, especially when faced with physical limitations, safety concerns and a lack of information. This program is designed to provide the necessary guidance and support to help participants embark on their fitness journey, increase confidence and develop healthy habits.
The program is designed for two specific groups:
- Individuals transitioning from a cardiac rehabilitation program to regular physical activity.
- Sedentary individuals diagnosed with a chronic cardiovascular disease who are eager to begin an exercise program.
CA offers an eight-week program that includes two small group training classes and education sessions per week. Participants undergo pre- and post-program health assessments to track their progress and improvements.
In addition to the exercise component, this program provides valuable educational content tailored to the disease process, nutrition and lifestyle modifications. We equip participants with exercise tracking tools to monitor their activity levels and progress
